Vivarium Glass Runners: A Complete Buying and Fitting Guide

Building or repairing a vivarium usually goes smoothly right up until the sliding glass front stops sliding smoothly, or you realise the runners that came with a flat-pack enclosure were never particularly good in the first place. Glass runners are a small part of a vivarium build, but a poorly fitted or wrongly sized runner is one of the most common causes of a sticking door, a gap that lets heat escape, or a panel that will not sit flush.
What Vivarium Glass Runners Do
Vivarium glass runners are PVC channel profiles fitted inside the frame of a vivarium to guide a sliding glass panel. They allow the glass to slide open and closed smoothly for feeding, cleaning and animal handling, while keeping the panel seated securely enough to maintain the enclosure's internal temperature and humidity. Most vivarium designs use two sliding glass panels that overlap in the middle, running in a pair of parallel channels. Getting the channel depth right is what determines whether the glass slides freely or binds against the frame.
Top Runner vs Bottom Runner: What's the Difference?
The main difference is channel depth: the top runner has a deeper channel to allow sliding glass doors to lift in and out, while the bottom runner has a shallower channel to simply guide and seat the glass.
This is the detail most commonly missed when sourcing replacement runners, and it is worth getting right before you order. The top runner has a deeper channel. This extra depth is what allows the glass panel to be lifted upward and tilted out of the bottom channel for removal, which is how the panel gets fitted or taken out for cleaning in the first place. The bottom runner has a shallower channel. Its job is simply to guide the glass as it slides side to side, not to allow removal, so it does not need the extra depth. Fitting a deep-channel runner in the bottom position, or a shallow one at the top, is a common cause of glass that will not stay seated properly or will not come out for cleaning without a fight. Always check which position you are ordering for.
Measuring for a Replacement Runner
Before ordering, check two measurements: the thickness of the glass panel itself, and the length of channel needed to span the full width of the vivarium frame. Standard vivarium glass typically falls within the compatibility range of standard PVC runner channels, but it is worth measuring rather than assuming, particularly on older or custom-built enclosures where glass thickness can vary. Runners are supplied in one metre lengths and can be cut down to size with a fine-toothed saw, so ordering slightly over the length you need and trimming to fit is generally more reliable than trying to source an exact custom length.
Fitting Vivarium Glass Runners
Fit the bottom runner first, fixing it securely along the base of the frame opening with PVC adhesive or small screws. Fit the top runner directly above it, checked for alignment so the channels sit parallel. To fit the glass, insert the top edge of the panel into the top runner first, then lower the bottom edge down into the bottom channel. Reverse the process to remove a panel for cleaning. Take care not to over-tighten fixings on the runner itself, as this can distort the channel width slightly and cause the glass to bind.
When to Replace Rather Than Repair
If a runner has cracked, warped, or worn to the point where the glass rattles or will not stay seated, replacement is usually more reliable than trying to repair or pack out a damaged channel. PVC runners are inexpensive relative to the cost of a damaged glass panel, and a worn runner that lets a panel slip is a genuine risk to the animal inside if it allows a gap in an otherwise sealed enclosure.
